Calgary Celebrates Runway Renovation Success

The Calgary Airport Authority has announced the triumphant completion of Phases 1 to 4 in the ongoing West Runway Rehabilitation project at the YYC Calgary International Airport. Initiated on April 1, 2024, this ambitious endeavor engaged more than 300 professionals, including contractors, sub-contractors, consultants, and trade workers. Despite facing several challenges such as unexpected spring snowfall, a summer hailstorm, and city-wide water restrictions, the project team successfully overcame all obstacles and maintained an impeccable safety record with zero lost time injuries.

Details of the Completed Phases

Laura Samson, Director of Infrastructure at The Calgary Airport Authority, detailed the significant strides achieved this year, which included the installation of Runway End Safety Areas and the rehabilitation of the northern section of the West Runway, alongside its crucial intersection with the Crosswind Runway. She expressed her gratitude towards all teams involved for their unwavering commitment to safety and efficiency, which allowed the project to stay on or ahead of schedule with minimal disruptions to airport operations.

With the year’s work successfully completed, all runways at YYC are now fully operational for takeoffs and landings. No construction activities are planned for the winter months, with the next phase slated to resume in spring 2025.

Community Engagement Efforts Scheduled for 2025

In February 2025, the Calgary Airport Authority will initiate a series of community information sessions. These are designed to inform local residents about the project’s progression and to address any concerns regarding potential aircraft movement changes during the upcoming construction season.

These sessions underscore the Authority’s commitment to community engagement and transparency as they update and address any concerns from neighboring communities. The Authority acknowledges residents’ patience and understanding, especially in regard to temporary changes in aircraft noise during construction, affirming that projects like the West Runway Rehabilitation are pivotal to YYC’s growth and Calgary’s global connectivity.
